Nosy Iranja: Madagascar's Twin-Island Paradise Named 4th Best Beach in the World 2026

Nosy Iranja: Madagascar's twin-island paradise
A 2-kilometre sandbar that vanishes with the tide. Two islands. Turquoise water on both sides. And a brand-new global ranking that puts it firmly on every traveller's map.

Some beaches earn their reputation through sheer scale. Others through colour. Nosy Iranja has earned its place — fourth in the world for 2026, according to the freshly released World's 50 Best Beaches list — by quietly doing something almost no other beach can. Twice a day, it disappears, and then comes back.
The setup is geological theatre at its finest. Off the northwest coast of Madagascar, southwest of Nosy Be and its port of Hell-Ville, sit two small islands: Nosy Iranja Be, the larger and inhabited one, and tiny Nosy Iranja Kely. At low tide, a luminous two-kilometre sandbar rises out of the Indian Ocean to connect them — a soft white path you can walk barefoot from one island to the other. As the tide climbs, the path vanishes beneath turquoise water, and the two islands are once again separated by sea.
Nosy Iranja is the best beach I've ever seen.
— Drew, World's 50 Best Beaches judge
Why the judges chose it
The World's 50 Best Beaches awards are decided by more than 1,000 travel professionals, scoring each candidate on uniqueness, wildlife, how untouched it is, its natural soundscape, the ease and calmness of the water, crowding, and the likelihood of a "perfect beach day." For 2026, the judging team also began visiting hundreds of beaches in person year-round.
Nosy Iranja impressed on nearly every axis: the sandbar phenomenon is genuinely rare, the surrounding reef teems with marine life, and green sea turtles come ashore to nest along the same beaches visitors walk.

What you actually find there
The water on either side of the sandbar reads as two different blues — shallow milky turquoise close in, a deeper sapphire further out. Beyond the sand, the islands themselves are lush and green, with coconut palms, flowering trees, and a small fishing community on Nosy Iranja Be.
Snorkelling is easy from shore: clear water, no real waves on calm days, and reef life that ranges from hermit crabs to the occasional sea turtle gliding past. There is no resort scrum, no jet-ski rental row, no shopping promenade. The soundtrack, as the judges noted, is just ocean and wind.

Practical tips from local guides
- From Hell-Ville (Nosy Be): A boat or speedboat day trip, typically 1–2 hours each way.
- Best months: The drier season, April to November, brings the calmest water.
- Tide timing matters: Aim to be on the islands around low tide — that's when the full sandbar is walkable.
- Go early: Morning arrivals mean fewer visitors and softer light.
- Wind direction: Light wind, or wind blowing land-to-sea, produces the glassiest water.

More than a ranking
Lists like this come and go, but what Nosy Iranja's recognition really underlines is something quieter: the most extraordinary places on Earth are often the ones doing the least to impress you. No infinity pool, no curated experience. Just two islands, a tide, and a path that appears and disappears on its own schedule. If you make the trip, bring a mask and fins, and time your day around the moon.
